Christine Sinclair selected as Sun Media's flag bearer
By SUN MEDIA
It's official — or at least it should be by now.
We have no doubt who should carry the Canadian flag in Sunday's Closing Ceremony: based on overall performance and the results of our online polls, soccer sensation Christine Sinclair is the perfect pick to lead Canada's athletes through the final event at London.
Sinclair's three-goal game in the semifinal against the top-ranked U.S. is one of the greatest individual performances by a Canadian in Summer Games history, and her leadership helped the women's team win bronze — the first team-sport medal Canada has won at the Summer Olympics in more than 75 years.
While hardcore soccer fans knew about her exploits, most Canadians awoke only in the past week to what's been clear for years: that Christine Sinclair is perhaps the greatest female soccer player on earth and certainly the best player, male or female, this country has ever produced.
We posted an online poll asking you who should carry the Maple Leaf at the Closing Ceremony, and nearly 14,000 votes were registered as of Saturday morning. A whopping 80% want Sinclair to do the honours.
The only other contender to garner more than 2% was gold medallist Rosie McLennan, who drew 13% of the vote.
So that's it.
There can be no debate.
It's Christine Sinclair.
She's our star of the London Olympics. And she's earned this honour.
