By BOB MACKIN, Special to QMI Agency
LONDON - Martha McCabe, a Torontonian who trains in Vancouver, swam to a fifth-place finish in the final of the Olympic women’s 200-metre breaststroke Thursday at the Aquatics Centre. McCabe started in Lane 1 in the final of her first Olympics against favoured Rebecca Soni of the United States. Soni set a new world and Olympic record of 2:19.59 to become the first Beijing 2008 swimming champion to repeat at the London Games. McCabe’s time was 2:23.16. McCabe won bronze at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai to automatically qualify for London. Her 23rd birthday is Sunday. |
