Quebec 4, Rest of Canada 0

When will the rest of Canada wake up?

By REJEAN TREMBLAY, QMI Agency

LONDON - “Quebec 4 — Canada 0, you have to wake up! We can’t do it all by ourselves!”

Of course, the jest aimed at our Sun Media colleagues and teammates was an easy one. We were waiting for Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion in the interview area when the rumour started to go around. Judoka Antoine Valois-Fortier had just won bronze in an incredible epic. And Christine Girard, the girl from Rouyn-Noranda, was a few efforts away from a bronze medal which would make her the first Canadian weightlifting medalist. All of a sudden...

This 4-0 is an old joke straight from Albertville and Lillehammer. The Quebec speed skaters were reaping bunches of medals while the rest of the country could not do anything. We even installed a big thermometer in the Quebec part of the newsroom. The blue thermometer rose a lot faster than the red.

We’ll stay friendly this time. Our colleagues are nice and they are a good team, and the athletes from other provinces should, bar some great disappointment, shine in the days to come. Although we still have some aces up our sleeves in rowing and diving.

The other question is how Marcel Aubut plans on celebrating these achievements. The Canada House almost burst from the cheers for Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel, so what will happen for THREE bronze medals? Inside fireworks? Baby Duck? French speeches from the big bosses at Bell?

I’d go with the Baby Duck ... if you can still find some.
