Tilleyvision: I believe theme song should be retired

LONDON - I believe it’s time for Canada to get a new Olympic theme song.

I Believe, the inspirational ditty by Montreal’s Nikki Yanofsky, was an appropriate tune for the 2010 Winter Games – it’s about having faith in yourself, the strength that comes in unity and all that inspirational stuff – and Yanofsky is a lovely, socially responsible young woman, making her a perfect musical ambassador for Canada. I Believe is the song we associate with Canada’s many victories in Vancouver in 2010.

But you can’t hear a song — or snippets of a song — dozens or even hundreds of times over a period of two years and not get sick of it. I know I’m not alone in wishing CTV had commissioned a new song for the Summer Games instead of recycling the 2010 theme. And it’s not just in occasional segments; it’s once again built into all the broadcast interstitials, retrospectives and such. Inescapable.

There’s been some backlash against I Believe on social media already, but some have also risen to the well-worn song’s defense. “Happy CTV is using the ‘I Believe’ #Olympic song again, I don’t care if everyone said they’re sick of it, song still brings the chills!” tweets @ScottDangerKerr. Adds @1LifeinAnalog, “The same way I never tire of cute kitten videos, I never tire of “I Believe”. But I may feel different after the meds kick in.”

After waking up very early to begin watching Day One Olympics coverage, I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was seeing what I was really seeing: McDonald’s-branded glasses on the CTV Olympic Morning anchor desk. Really, guys? Why not just have Dave Randorf and Catriona Le May Doan checking medal results on a Samsung smartphone, putting their Nike-clad feet up on the desk to relax and then use a Bounty paper towel to clean up the mess when they knock the McCafe glass over? The ad-lympics are already oversaturated with commercial messages. Do we need them seeping into the broadcaster coverage also?

I feel sorry for Americans who have to rely on NBC’s televised coverage for their Olympics fix. Not only did these folks not get to watch Danny Boyle’s eccentric, wonderful Opening Ceremony live, but they’re being screwed out of seeing other important moments as they unfold, presumably so NBC can hoard the big stuff for primetime.

F’rinstance, when U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte won gold in the men’s 400-metre individual medley Saturday (a race in which Michael Phelps finished fourth), CTV showed Lochte accepting his medal, the first awarded in swimming at these games. And NBC? They decided a women’s volleyball preliminary round game was more interesting for the mid-afternoon audience. Unreal.

American Olympics fans, I’ve got a big TV and a pull-out couch, if you’re looking for a place to crash. Just putting it out there.
