Olympics: Barcelona (1992)

Victim: Derek Redmond, Great Britain

What Happened: British sprinter Derek Redmond's hamstring snapped with about 250 metres to go in his semi-final, 400-metre sprint. He came to a stop and was then helped by his father Jim to the finish line. He was disqualified from the race but the IOC has honoured his tenacity in their Celebrate Humanity videos.

Olympics: Sydney (2000)

Victim: Kristen Maloney, U.S.A.

What Happened: Maloney hurt her leg - one with a stress fracture and iron rod in it - during a vault attempt at the Sydney Games. Through intense pain she would perform another vault, landing her in fourth for the competition. During the same games, Hungary's Adrienn Nyeste would take a bad tumble off the bars, knocking herself silly.

Olympics: Los Angeles (1984)

Victim: Mary Decker, U.S.A.

What Happened: The heavy favourite in the 3000-metre race, Decker was trailing South African sprinter Zola Budd in the finals. When Budd, a half-stride ahead of her American opponent, cut into the inside lane, Decker collided with her, fell to the curb and injured her hip. During a press conference Decker blamed Budd for the fall but upon review of the video footage Budd was absolved of all wrong-doing.

Olympics: Beijing (2008)

Victim: Janos Baranyai, Hungary

What Happened: At the 2008 games, Janos Baranyai, while attempting to lift 148-kilograms in the men's 77-kilogram snatch, dislocated his elbow.

Olympics: London (1908)

Victim: Dorando Pietri, Italy

What Happened: A shop-boy in an Italian confectionery store, Pietri was one of the first athletes to run the marathon at its current length. When an exhausted and dehydrated Pietri ran in the wrong direction, he was instructed on the correct way. He then collapsed. He was helped up by officials but collapsed four more times. He would eventually cross the finish line in first but the American team filed a complaint due to Pietri's need for assistance. The gold was stripped from Pietri after his disqualification and then given to the U.S.'s Johnny Hayes. Still, he was awarded a golden cup by Queen Alexandra for his efforts.

Olympics: Seoul (1988)

Victim: Greg Louganis, U.S.A.

What Happened: During the preliminary rounds of his diving competition at the Seoul Olympics, Louganis suffered a concussion after bouncing his head off the springboard. At the time he did no disclose he was HIV-positive, which he was diagnosed with two months before the games.

Olympics: Beijing (2008)

Victim: Liu Yan, China

What Happened: Celebrated dancer Liu Yan was chosen as the lead in the "Silk Road" during the 2008 Olympics opening ceremony. Twelve days before her performance, July 27, 2008, she fell from a malfunctioning platform resulting in severe nerve and spinal damage. She was paralyzed from the waist down.

Olympics: Rome (1960)

Victim: Knud Jensen, Denmark

What Happened: On August 26, 1960, Danish cyclist Knud Jensen collapsed during his Olympic event, fractured his skull and was later pronounced dead at a Rome hospital. An autopsy revealed he had taken amphetamine with a nicotinyl alcohol tartrate. Jensen was the first documented doping case and his death led to the IOC creating a medical commission that first test athletes for drugs during the 1968 Winter and Summer games in Grenoble, France and Mexico City respectively.

Olympics: Atlanta (1996)

Victim: American Alice Hawthorne and Turkish cameraman Melih Uzonyol

What Happened: Early in the morning of July 27, 1996, while Jack Mack and the Heart Attack performed, three pipe bombs exploded, killing two and wounding 111 more. If it wasn't for the package's discovery by security guard Richard Jewell more would have been killed. It wasn't until 2005 that Eric Rudolph would be sentenced to three concurrent life sentences for the Atlanta bombing and three more in Georgia.

Olympics: Munich (1972)

Victims: 11 members of the Israeli team, one West German police officer

What Happened: September 4, 1972 would go down as the most infamous moment in Olympic history as eight members of Palestinian terrorist group, Black September, entered the Athlete's Village on 31 Connollystrasse, and broke into one of the apartments housing members of the Israeli team. In the end, eleven members of the Israeli team were killed, one West before five of the eight terrorists were killed.
