Canadian Douglas gets disqualified

WHISTLER, B.C - There was more trouble for Canadian skeleton competitors Friday at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Minutes after Canadian women’s hopeful Mellisa Hollingsworth skidded from second to fifth, men’s team member Michael Douglas was disqualified from the final two runs.

Officially, Douglas was disqualified for entering a banned area before competition. The problem arose when Douglas took his sled to the park ferme (the skeleton term for the areas where sleds are kept before competition) but the runners on the sled were still covered, which is illegal.

“The runners were uncovered three minutes too late,” the race jury said in a statement.

Douglas entered the second day of competition in seventh place.
