Motherhood and Medals

News on the road to the Olympic Games

An illuminating article out this week, Pursuing Motherhood and Medals, by Claire Carver-Dias in the Canadian Journal for Women in Coaching, is a good read. Women's Olympic ice hockey champion Becky Kellar writes about how she manages her career and motherhood.

"Whether a woman is a high performance coach or an athlete, the prevailing attitude claims that she cannot possibly continue her pursuit of excellence when she becomes a mother," writes Carver-Dias. "Success stories are slowly emerging, creating role models and showing what can happen when the commitment is strong. The article spells out the challenges and cites examples, notably in the corporate world, where employers are taking steps to accommodate women who combine working with motherhood. It is a sad fact that our sport world lags far behind."

Skating Anthem

If you like Bryan Adams, Great Big Sea or John Cougar Mellancamp, then the new Skate Canada anthem is worth a listen. I Will Achieve is written and performed by Skate Canada Director Coaching and Skating Programs Jeff Partrick. Backup vocals are by Skate Canada Skating Programs Senior Manager, Donna King.

It was first introduced at the 2009 Skate Canada Annual Convention and General Meeting. Skate Canada quickly adopted it as an anthem for all Skate Canada members.

Three versions of I Will Achieve are available www.oncdbaby.com/cd/jeffpartrick. Rock, acoustic, and instrumental rock versions are $0.99 each or all three for $2.97. Partrick is planning on donating a percentage of the sales.
