Carter bound for Vancouver

Asked to fly in on Sunday in case Getzlaf hasn't recovered

VANCOUVER - Ryan Getzlaf hopes to have his legs under him Friday.

Jeff Carter will be winging it Sunday.

Carter, the Philadelphia Flyers forward, has been told to fly here Sunday in case Getzlaf, the Anaheim Ducks forward who injured his ankle Monday, isn’t healthy enough to help Team Canada in the Olympic tournament, TSN reported.

“Skating Friday or Saturday is our goal right now,” Getzlaf said Wednesday. “Hopefully I can play Sunday or even Saturday, for that matter. Those definitely are the goals right now, to progress this week, stay off it for the next couple of days, then maybe put the skates on Friday or Saturday.

“All signs are point to things progressing to the way we want it to. We have our fingers crossed and hopefully things will keep going the same way and we don’t have any setbacks.”

Getzlaf is still wearing a protective boot, but said he no longer required crutches. While playing for Canada is his dream, the Ducks are still his priority. He can kill two birds with one stone if he can play in one of the Ducks games this weekend: he can help his club and prove to Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman he's ready to help Canada.
