Should women hockey players apologize for smoking and drinking on ice?
Fri, February 26, 2010

VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

IOC chides golden girls

This comment is FULLY MODERATED.

Let's state the facts, the stands were empty. All the articles say they did it after the fans had left and were going back out onto the ice for a photo. The fuss is started by the US press who are critisizing sports that they are not winning. THey no longer win figure skating and a few US websites have articles about unfair judging. Funny they never complain when they win.

I have a feeling that if it was the Americans celebrating, no one would have mentioned it. Seems like every gold medal Canada wins, someone is whining. I agree with sporty, the whiners should get a life.

Congrats to our hockey heros. You have as much right as any other Gold Medal winner to celebrate, when ever and where ever you want. When I find out who the reporter is who caused this fury, I will boycott that newspaper. Furthermore I question the loyalty of the editor who allowed this photo to be published. PARTY ON GIRLS. LOYAL CANADIANS ARE PROUD OF YOU.

If the young women in question where men there wouldn't even be a mention of the party antics . They just won "GOLD" let them have their party ,they richly deserve it

Some of the people that have the negative comments about the girls enjoying winning the gold, with a beer and cigar should get a life.

This is a useless tournement, basically a 1 week practice session before the inevitable end game with the USA. This should not be in the Olympics, annyone who says otherwise is full of it. They act like they battled for a week too get to this point, hardley!

Bring the hate, I'm just saying what most are thinking.

"The 2010 Games are officially tobacco-free, but VANOC bowed to pressure from European media and dignitaries and set-up designated smoking areas at venues." copied from news report.

Can you say "Hypocrites!" EH!
