Should women hockey players apologize for smoking and drinking on ice?
Fri, February 26, 2010

VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

IOC chides golden girls

If the worst thing Canada has to worry about is our Gold Medal athletes celebrating a life dedicated achievement by having a cigar and a beer, then we are on easy street. Way to go girls!!!!!!!!!!! Have one for me and the rest of nova scotia!

If the Americans had won and done the same thing, we would be calling it classless, tasteless and boorish. But if we do it, it's "Hey, party on!"

It's a sad day when Canadians are so self-centred we can't see our own hypocrisy or trailer-trash manners.

The mens team, should they win gold, are now pretty much obliged to bring out a few token beers and cigars. It's what you do for team mates. No wrong has been done and lets just underline that.

Talk about hypocrites, this is the IOC/COC that were passing out free condoms in the Olympic Village. I guess the girls should have just got their guys and turned out the lights to send the right message to the youngsters of our country.Obviously the shirts at the IOC/COC have already condoned that behaviour by all the athletes.

Party Hardy Girls ,you deserve it!

They just won GOLD! They deserve and earned their celebrations. Go Canada, sports capital of the world!

It is absolutely not necassary to apologize. A spur of the moment celebration for a significant achievement should be applauded. These stodgy old farts that run the IOC have probably never tasted victory, therefore wouldn't understand whst it means to really celebrate. Congaratulations Ladies

Absolutely ridiculous. The fans were gone and it was a private celebration. Some of these athletes will never get this chance again in their careers. They shouldn't apologize but Haley should say that they are sorry some are offended by their private outpouring of emotion.

All of you chauvinistic fans/buffoons that say that it isn't a real sport should jump on the ice and play against them. I guarantee you will look more like Slovakia than the US against them.

Honestly, sour grapes either from the US or from someone who doesn't truly appreciate the effort and skill they have. Go back to watching WWE and UFC. Make sure they don't have a cigar or drink though.

No apology required but nice GFY might be appropriate for anyone who wants to make a big deal of this.
