Should women hockey players apologize for smoking and drinking on ice?
Fri, February 26, 2010

VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

Do we not have bigger things to worry about? Assuming this was done after the arena was empty and not in front of other teams or fans surely there are bigger issues of the day.

again - much to do about nothing - let the girls celebrate as they with - well deserved celebration

How is this even a story? Montgomery chugged a pitcher of beer on the streets of Whistler and we loved it, yet the women lie on the ice, drinking champagne, beer and smoke a stogey while the place is empty and they get crapped on. Do Not Apologize!!!

I think one of the girls hockey sticks must have gotten stuck in someones back side. They were just having fun they worked very hard and lets not lose sight of what they acheived. Way to go Canada's womens hockey team.

Give me a break! These girls/women just won the top prize in the world for their sport, let them celebrate. It's funny that the IOC would critisize when they are an organization based in Europe, where children are given wine at dinner and alcohol is a part of the culture. Now, if they get into their cars afterwards, you have every right to be concerned. Get the sticks out of your butts and try joining in these girls elation. I for one am proud to call them my fellow countrywomen, 2 sips of beer or not. Way to go Ladies!!!!

I also wonder...were the cigars actually lit? If so, the athletes should also face fines for violating B.C.'s smoking bylaws. I'm truly disappointed if this is all accurate. And yes, to answer the question, VERY necessary to apologize. A statement from their captain would also be appropriate. How embarrassing.

Absolutely not!
