VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

Congrats girls on the win but the smoking and alcohol kinda sets a bad example by giving the perception of misconduct by our "clean" hardworking athletes.

looks bad but since the reporter stayed in the arena " hours after the public left" to report on this what should have been private celebration. I say it is more media scandal invention. SHAME! on you REPORTER just garbage picking.

Absolutley not, they just won the gold medal, let them have their moment of glory. Does anyone complain when Nascar drivers open bottles of champagne and spray it all over the place on the victory podium? Congradulations girls, keep this moment with you forever.

VERY stupid thing for this team to do. Where were the coaches and management staff? Did none of them realize that this is the Olympics and EVERY little item becomes a big story???

If all of the women were of age it wouldn't be as bad.

As Canadians we don't shy away from our mistakes. Apologize as a team for this mistake and move on!

GET OVER IT

These Olympic prudes need to get a life. From a public perspective, how can it be OK for Prof sporting events to have their dressing room celebrations broadcast live, some of the players partially dressed but the Olympic athletes have to hide it, and then if caught everybody is asked to apologize. Take A BIG PILL, PEOPLE!!!

Not at all! The place had already been emptied. They were doing what any Canadians would do, and we should be proud of them.

Of course they should not apologize, these are adults who worked hard and achieved thier goal of Olympic Gold. this is Canada, not Utah, and haveing a beer to celebrate being the best womens hockey team in the world sounds like a good idea to me. The IOC can go %$#@ on a $#*^!

Hell no!
Todd Davis, 2010-02-26 11:17:55

No need to apoligize to the IOC one of the most corrupt organizations in the world. These aging foogies just don't get it.
