Should women hockey players apologize for smoking and drinking on ice?

VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

Absolutely not! These girls have a right to celebrate. It was a private party and should not have been intruded upon by some dirt grabbing reporter. Should the underage girl have been drinking....no. But if I was an 18 yr. old girl who just won a gold metal for my country I'd wanna pound a cold one myself. Leave these girls alone. Don't make a big deal out of nothing significant. Congrats girls! Good job!

I'd be a hypocrit if I said they should appologise.

I generally have had a stogy and a couple beers after every game with the boys.

I say. Win or lose, hit the booze.

Hockey camada should not apologize for the ladies that celebrate their victory for Gold. How about the skier that was drinking from a pitcher of beer on the street after wininng the gold?.

To the nay-sayers. Get a life. I doubt if any, including the youngster...will be seriously hurt in their future lives...for intaking a pint or puffing a celebatory cigar. Not a good example to others...get a life. They're wonderful, dedicated Canadian women.

NO:

Whats next should Canadians apologize for being patriotic since it makes us look like Americans. All you holier than thou commentators should sit back and relax, let them have their fun they earned. If this is the worst thing they do then all of the girls parents should be proud of them as they will grow to be outstanding citizens and role models.

I distintly rememeber seeing a (male) gold medalist for the skeleton accepting a pitcher of beer IN PUBLIC AND AT THE VENUE in which he competed. Not a word on that one. They just finished the game of their lives. This should not take away from their accomplishment. Yes bad judgement maybe but they were in the building after everyone had left. Apologize for questionable judgement then put this one to bed.

I agree and have had a few beer after a game. In THE DRESSING ROOM. Remember it is illegal to have alcohol in most arenas. many arenas turn a blind eye to a social beer after a game. We have our own rules so that we don't jepardize the pleasure like getting rid of the empties and not leaving a mess. These girls went out on the ice. STUPID. The cigars weren't nescessary either. Our younger girls adore these idols and now they see that they are boozers and smokers. Way to go.
