Should women hockey players apologize for smoking and drinking on ice?

VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

Congrats ladies for bringing home the gold!! Their celebration is nothing to be embarrassed about. They earned every swig of beer and every draw of the stogies. I'm sick of the puritanical stance being taken by the IOC and sadly some of the commenters. Their celebration does not lessen their "role model" status. They proved they worked hard and can think for themselves by choosing to enjoy a drink and a cigar. That's something to aspire to. Not to become an automaton.

Absolutley they were wrong. While a celebration is expected they needed to understand what event they are at and what it represents. They won and have to understand the public perception to proper values.

@#$% the Associated press for ratting to the IOC!!! Once again the 'too much power of the press' rears its ugly head. Someday we'll need to chop it off!

They had better not apologize, only in Canada would you have to apologize for celebrating. People, where has common sense gone?

Hockey players having a drink after winning a major event? That must be a first.

IOC should relax, there's nothing wrong with having a little fun. This is Canada after all and that's how we celebrate. Besides, how often does a team win gold on home ice anyway?

Apologize? Hell, no

This is Canada, we drink beer after a hockey game.

Let them enjoy and celebrate the moment with a couple of cold ones, it's not like they hurt someone.

Hockey Canada and the Women's team have nothing to apologize. The women did great and deserve to celebrate. Others should get a life and stop raining on their parade.

Gimme a break, the pouty faces on the American Players was a far worse display in my books. Only Chu and a couple others didn't look like a bunch of spoiled brats who didn't get a pony for their birthday....way to go ladies
