Should women hockey players apologize for smoking and drinking on ice?
Fri, February 26, 2010

VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

Love the puritans here. They had a beer and a cigar. Sounds like a celebration to me. To those critical of an underage drinker, only if you waited for your first drink after the age of majority do you have the right to be critical, all others - double standard, look in the mirror. To those saying that the girls have to be held to a higher standard - why? I think they have been nothing but classy individuals. It has become apparant in this day that everything everybody does is left open for everyone to judge - again why? What right do you have to judge, who made you the purveyor of all thats allowed? Get off your high horses, chances are you are just unhappy in your life, stay out of everyone elses.

To the Ladies hockey team, Congratulations on your Gold, go forth and party, cause chances are you have to go back to work to squeak by a living like the rest of us. To those who are sticking their morals on the rest of us, get lost, we are getting real tired of you pushing your lack of life on the rest of us.

First off there is nothing to apologize for. Are we that vain that we are truly worried what other countries out there think of us? Enough of this politically correct garble and let them enjoy what they have accomplished. It looks like their only mistake here was to not send away the media when the rest of the crowds left the building. Get over it; there are bigger things with today’s global issues that warrant our attention. Focus your capacity on something else and carry on, enough said.

Conratulations to the Gold Medal Win! Enjoy the beer you deserve to celebrate. The threats over elimninating women's hockey from the olymics because of disparity is ridiculous. Men's hockey was dominated by Canada and Russia for 40 years and no one cried disparity then...eventually the Chezcs, Finns and Swedes caught up and this will happen too in Women's hockey. You know, in Men's Junior Hockey you see the same kind of scores and no one is complaining about that. Female hockey players have worked too hard and too long to have what is their right to play taken away! Let us compete!

wow, they celebrated like the majority of canadians would. The location makes no difference. Move on to the next useless news story getting this much attention.

An emphatic NO! There is nothing wrong with celebrating a hard played well deserved Gold medal game. If any Canadians have an issue with an under 19 player drinking in B.C after representing Canada impressively to the world, they should probably lace up and try out for the womens puritan team. No comments or news stories about the TV Gold that was/is Jon Montgomery. No double standards IOC, COC, Canada if one athelete can enjoy thier outstanding performance for our conuntry they all should be able to. Guilt and nay sayer free!

Apologize? For what, partying in a place where the general public had already departed.

Is this the first time anyone celebrated a Gold medal win? OR Is this the first time the tree hugging AP member ever saw a hockey team celebrate a Championship. As for underage drinking, it is illegal to purchase or be in a place where licensing makes it illegal. I'm sure Mom and Dad gave permission to their underage Daughter just like any/every other parent has when their underage children drank. If its an issue, then Comunion at Church should be illegal, after all is celebrating a hockey Championship not a religion in this the best Country on earth?!
