Should women hockey players apologize for smoking and drinking on ice?

VANCOUVER -- Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for a boozy impromptu party the Olympic women's hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.

Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.

The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada's underage players.

In a statement released late Thursday, Hockey Canada apologized.

Do you think it was necessary for Hockey Canada to apologize for the players? Have your say in our forum.

There are too many Mikes here at first I thought it was me you responded too but, it was not.

Now, it does not change my opinion of you. It was an after game problem, not an "in-game" issue so explain disgraced medal? Had they cheated or used performance enhancing drugs or supplements, that would be a disgrace.

What is a disgrace is calling " mike, 2010-02-27 11:29:07" or what ever "Mike" comment you chose! Now, stating "...a fat kid with glasses...", that is a disgrace! Yes this forum is about opinions, of the topic not a place to execute personal attacks against others comments.

More insidious political correctness. Just because someone does not like the way the team celebrated, does not necessitate an apology. It was the team's business and no one else's.

to jess

it was not the IOC that asked the american snowboarder to leave it was the US olympic committee. It was the right call by the USOC, hopefully it will be followed by the COC and not allow the girls to participate in the closing ceremonies.

Mike"its a disgraced medal, it shows no olympic spirit it went against everything the olympics stand for. It is one of the worst things i have ever seen in olympic history, i would have no problem if the IOC DQ'd the canadian women for sheer unsportsmanlike conduct"

that Mike, has to be one of the dumbest things I've read.

People like you(clueless), really have no idea about life outside your little self-absorbed bubble, right?

I'd guess , you're the fat kid with glasses without any fight in you whatsoever.

Give me a break. These ladies worked their butts off to get this gold medal. There was no damage done to anything. No violence displayed. Just a quiet sensible get together afterwards with a Molsons and a cigar. So what. They deserved to do it. It's a non issue that the IOC wants to make anything they can of. Unbelievable!!

Folks, the arena was EMPTY except for journalists, family and players. This is nothing more that a "journalistic rag" on the team's parade. The general public had left the building and the players were just "blowing off steam".... THE SAME WAY THEY DID IN TURIN AND SALT LAKE in 2006 and 2002. Is this the only thing that journalists have to hold on to? The "game" was the story not its aftermath. The "gold" and the team have not been tarnished. Who cares if an 18 year old had a few post-game drinks? She is eligble to do so in her home province of Quebec and the province of Alberta where they train. Lighten up, folks, no one was "impaired" in any capacity......

Congrats Girls,

This is the Quebec way to celebrate and I am sure the rest of Canada is not offended. You are the best in the world, no matter what the other thinks. I am having a beer for you.

Bravo Canada.

A hockey team wins a championship on home ice and celebrates with beer and champagne.Water freezes, beavers disappear and the Leafs suck.

It's winter time in Canada.

they should be asked to leave the olympics just like the americaian that had to leave for the photos of the hot asin chick bitting his medal. They made the IOC look bad therefore they should have to leave the village too. If not then there is no standard and the ioc is a joke
