CoComm sits without its chairman
By BOB MACKIN -- 24 Hours Vancouver

IOC's 2010 Co-ordination Commission chair was out of commission himself yesterday morning as Vancouver's Olympic Committee came under the microscope.

Rene Fasel, the Swiss president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, was absent with an undisclosed illness.

"We are looking forward to him leading the meetings again [Wednesday]," said IOC communications coordinator Robert Roxburgh.

CoComm is visiting Vancouver for a third routine visit to evaluate planning of the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

Gilbert Felli, IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, said February's Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy showed "a very good relationship between culture and sport," but "there were issues" around venue readiness, transportation and accommodations.

"Everything you do today will affect your operation in 2010 when you open the Olympic Games," Felli told VANOC board members and executives in a meeting room at VANOC's East Vancouver headquarters.

CoComm will offer a report card on VANOC at a news conference this afternoon.

"We place a very high premium on this visit," said VANOC chief executive officer John Furlong.

Meanwhile, VANOC announced yesterday it would begin releasing quarterly financial reports on June 14.
