Games injury a blow to Raptors

By Steve Simmons, SUN MEDIA

BEIJING - Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon is done for the Olympic Games.

Just how this affects the Raptors in the short term is another matter entirely.

An MRI in Beijing has revealed that Calderon suffered what has been described as a partial tear of the adductor, better known as a groin strain. It isn't yet known if he will require surgery.

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo, in Beijing for the Olympics, confirmed the medical diagnosis and said he is following up with Calderon to determine the severity of the injury.

This is the second time in two years that a Raptor mainstay has been injured while playing internationally for his country. Last year, the Raptors lost valuable Jorge Garbajosa -- a teammate of Calderon's here -- for the entire season and he was let go at the end of the NBA season.

Calderon is still expected to be ready for training camp, but might not be completely healed by then.

Spain, led by Calderon, was expected to make the gold medal game. Now, it must play Lithuania Friday in the basketball semi-finals without Calderon running the offence.
