Was it right for the Swedish wrestler to discard his medal?
Thu, August 14, 2008

While Canada looks for its first medal at the Olympics, Sweden is giving them back.

During the medal ceremony in the 84-kilogram Greco-Roman event Thursday, Sweden's Ara Abrahamian took off the bronze from around his neck and, in disgust, dropped it on the mat in protest as he walked away.

The Swede was irate at a disputed point in his semifinal loss to eventual champion Andrea Minguzzi of Italy.

I am completely disappointed in how there was talk to abandon the Cdn team after the 1st week and no medals. Now that the games are comming to a close, the band wagon is again full. Please look at the top 5 finishes we've had, and the historical moments in sport we've achieved. We are a country of 30 million people, the olympics is a competition of the best. About only sending those who are guaranteed to medal - what do those people have to say about Rodger Federer, Tennis's #1 player in the world not even making it out of the prelim's at the Olympics, and the Williams sisters Again out in the prelims. If we shold only give medals to those guaranteed to medal, why have a competition?

Thats the problem with opinion (judged) sports. He chose that sport. Live with it. He just proved he deserves the gold in the jerk olympics

At the least, it's a lack of sportmanship. Most of the athletes there would be happy just to get the bronze. Show your peers some respect and take the medal.

He's not the first person to feel cheated at the Olympics and he won't be the last. But that's what happens when a sport's scoring system is subjective.

I am not a professional wrestler nor a big fan but I am of the whole Olympic spirit.

If the referee or the judges were wrong, I have all the respect in the world for this athlete. Let the higher up's and the world see to it that it never happens again. If he was truely defeated, it is a shame.
