Who should carry Canada's flag?
Tue, July 22, 2008

There are several candidates for the honour of being Canada's Olympic flag-bearer , including equestrian Ian Millar, kayaker Adam van Koeverden, diver Alexandre Despatie, triathlete Simon Whitfield and trampoline star Karen Cockburn. The COC will name the flag-bearer at a morning news conference. A second news conference has also been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in Toronto.

The opening ceremonies will be held Aug. 8 at the Beijing National Stadium.

at this point I don't think its a question of who gets to? but who has to. this Olympics is a disgrace. "Oh not enough money", really I'm sure thats a problem as always but to have this blowout. One wonders has the deliberate ''Liberalization'' of "Canadian Values" for last 50 years schemed by the liberal slime politicians and enforced by the Liberal beauracracy, been succesful that we lack the will to win. Just what every dictorial regime seeks to maintain power - a population with an easily dominated spirit.

somethings wrong with the picture that the excuse of money can be accepted. Lets see other G8 members all in the top 10 - economics clearly some link, but statiscal testing of physical capabilities will show Canada to be no different than other populations, so the thing that seems to be missing is a fundamental lack of heart and true desire in the "new generation". Pathetic. They think every thing comes to them, no somethings you have to get, and excuses as always are for losers.

Congratulations to Adam van Koeverden, having been chosen the flag-bearer for Canada.

Whether he speaks English, French, Polish, German, which ever language, he is carrying our flag and leading our Canadian Team into the arena of competition. He will not be asked to give a speach. So who cares what language he communicates in. That is his choice.

As a French Canadian I am so tired of the French media raising the LANUGAGE question and causing a stir each time the occasion arises whether in politics, show business, sports, when in this case the athlete's only duty is to do what is necessary to be at the top of his/her game whatever game it might be.

As with the recent problems of the 400th Anniversary of Quebec City regarding Sir Paul McCartney and Celine Dion, it really bothers me that some of the French media and French population of Quebec can be so small of mind when it comes to these things.

They should take a moment to reflect and realize that in the eyes of the international population they come across as being so petty and jealous of others and even themselves. Instead, they should add their voices in support of the people who represent them in the grand international scheme of things and not put them down because they don't speak French.

GO CANADA GO.

Every team member should have a chance to carry the flag by drawing a name from a hat. That way there is no favouritism, but when it comes right down to it there is no right or wrong choice as long as whoever is carrying it doesn't trip and fall on their face.

No disrespect to the kayaker, but Karen Cockburn was a more deserving choice, who has not yet been similarly recognized. The kayaker has already carried the flag for Canada. A medalist in the last TWO Olympics, Karen has been a model citizen, without controversy; a true team player, (in an infdividual sport), she has been the equivalent of Canada's Tiger Woods in trampoline. Dominant in Canada and the world, she has been a great inspiration to many new athletes entering the sport. She's a great person whose story should be told.

Doesn;t matter who carries the flag. and there is no jinx. just think the odds of someone winning a medal and holding the flag is not huge.

I'd would really like to see Kevin Sullivan carrying the flag. He has been a great representative for Canada for over the years in International Track and Cross Country.

Hands down, it has to be van Koeverden. He's a two-time medalist in the Olympics and has a legitimate chance at bringing home more medals this time. Adam should be carrying the flag at the opening ceremony.
