Considering she dropped out of competitive cross-country skiing to have a baby just over two years ago, it's quite an amazing feat that Milaine Theriault is back on the national team, let alone posting some of the best results of her 12-year career. Throw in the fact that she also suffered a serious back injury last year, and her amazing return is even more astounding.
Unlike most world-class cross-country skiers, Theriault got a relatively late start in the sport. Not until her parents began a chapter of the prestigious Jackrabbit Ski League in the small town of St. Quentin, QC, when Theriault was 12 years old, did she start serious training.
After climbing through the junior ranks, Theriault would eventually join the national team in the 1990's. In 1998, she was a late qualifier for the Nagano Games. Unfortunately, she did not have great results in her individual races, finishing outside of the Top-50 in each of her three events.
Four years later at the Salt Lake City Games, Theriault and teammates Sara Renner and Beckie Scott, performed under a cloud of controversy after taking part in a fundraising calendar in 2001 -- entitled "Nordic Nudes". Nonetheless, Theriault managed four Top-35 finishes.
Despite her recent layoffs, Theriault is now doing some of her best racing. She finished 22nd in the sprint at the 2005 World Championships and picked up two Top-30 finishes early in the 2005-06 World Cup season. Don't be surprised if she has her best Games yet in Turin.
