Some will say that there are few Canadians making their Olympic debut in Turin as focused or as motivated as Devon Kershaw.

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Kershaw first began cross-country skiing with his environmentalist parents at the tender age of two. But skiing wasn't Devon's only passion. Like many Canadian youngsters his age, Devon grew up playing hockey and idolizing the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux, but he dreamed not of playing in the NHL but of representing Canada at the highest international levels. Yet, despite his penchant for goal scoring, he decided to give up hockey and focus only on cross-country skiing at the age of 14.

In 2001, when he was 18, tragedy struck Devon when his girlfriend and fellow cross-country skier Sofie Manarin died in a tragic bicycling accident. Kershaw was left traumatized and heartbroken, but with also a strong sense of purpose. Less than a month later, he left Sudbury for Canmore, Alberta to join the national cross-country skiing team.

Kershaw's biggest career highlight dates back to August of 2005, when he and teammate George Grey finished in sixth place in the men's sprint relay at the World Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany. The astounding finish was a Canadian record.

Thus far, the 2005-06 season has been disappointing for Kershaw. He just started training and racing again in early January after being sidelined for over a month with an injured rib from a roller-skiing crash. If Kershaw can bounce back from his injury, he has the drive and the ability to be one of Canada's top cross-country skiers in Turin.
