Max Thompson, along with teammate Jason Myslicki, are the first Canadian athletes to compete in the nordic combined at the Olympics since Jon Servold in Calgary in 1988. Incidentally, Servold will be accompanying the pair to Turin as a Canadian coach.

After winning the Canadian Junior Nordic Combined Championship in 2004, Thompson was elevated to the senior ranks. He has competed primarily in B level World Cup races over the past two seasons, enjoying his best career finish of 11th-place at a race in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, in December of 2004.

At the 2005 Senior World Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany, Thompson got his first taste of competition with the big boys, placing 41st in the individual 15 km Gunderson and 45th in the 7.5 km sprint. The event was a big learning experience for the young competitor. Since then, he has continued to improve and recently placed 30th in a World Cup race (A level) in Harrachov, Czech Republic.

Thompson goes to Turin looking to gain more experience in a sport that doesn't boast a big profile in Canada. A personal best result would go a long way for an athlete that could be a factor in four year's time in Vancouver.
