As a young girl, Alex Gough never thought about luge until the day she tagged along with some friends as they went to check out a recruiting session in Calgary. The sport wouldn't turn out to be the right fit for her buddies, but it certainly was for her.

Now just 18, Gough -- one of the youngest members of Canada's Olympic team -- heads to Turin to compete in her first Winter Games alongside 19-year-old Meaghan Simister and grizzled team veteran Regan Lauscher, who turns 26 during the Games.

Originally, the plan for Gough was to set her sights on the Vancouver Games in 2010. Obviously, she had other plans. With four Top-20 results in her first five World Cup races during her rookie season this year -- including an 11th-place finish on her home course in Calgary --, she would not be denied a berth on the team.

Prior to her recent success on the senior World Cup circuit, Gough was a star in the junior ranks. Between the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, she accumulated seven Top-7 results in Youth A Junior Women's racing. Clearly, she was a woman racing among girls.

Like a good Western Canadian, Simister enjoys skiing, rock climbing and hiking. She also is said to enjoy strumming tunes on the guitar.
