Freestyle skier Warren Shouldice may have been born on April Fool's Day, but his inclusion on Canada's Olympic team in 2006 is definitely no joke. The aerials specialist has been tearing it up on the World Cup tour this season and comes to Turin as the third-ranked aerials skier on the circuit.
Considering he finished the 2004-05 season ranked 10th on the World Cup tour, his great showing during this Olympic year proves he has the ability to answer the call when it matters most. In eight events in 2005-06, Shouldice has six Top-10 results, including a win in Changchun, China; a silver in Deer Valley, Utah; and a bronze in Mont-Gabriel, QC.
This is not the first time that the four-year veteran of the team has had to prove himself when facing long odds. While performing in a water ramp show back in 2002, Shouldice suffered a serious neck injury, which required considerable time to heal but also gave the young skier a real sense of perspective.
Shouldice says the Lay triple full-full he landed in competition last season is one of the highlights of his career. Perhaps a medal performance on the planet's biggest sporting stage in Italy will provide him with a new memory to covet.
After Shouldice is finished competing in aerials, he says he may pursue a career in coaching.
