Four years ago, biathlete Robin Clegg came very close to not attending the 2002 Salt Lake City Games when he had failed to reach one of the required Olympic qualifying standards prior to the Canadian Olympic Committee's deadline. Fortunately, he would hit the needed mark just 10 days later, and after an arbitrator ruled that the performance should stand, he ended up in Utah, where he finished a respectable 28th in the grueling 20 km Individual race.

Born in Yellowknife, N.W.T., it wasn't much of a surprise when, as a two-year-old, Clegg took naturally to his first pair of skis. He began to race cross-country at age seven, but it wasn't until he moved to Ottawa as a teenager that he became interested in biathlon. In 1995 he competed in the Canada Winter Games and won two silver medals. That early success was enough to prove to him that he just may have a future in the sport.

In 2006, the 28-year-old Clegg comes to the Olympics much more experienced and confident of a good result. The holder of 10 Canadian Championship titles, and the winner in the 10 km race at the North American Championships in 2005, Clegg is also starting to make inroads in Europe where the sport enjoys a much higher profile.

With three Top-20 finishes on the World Cup Circuit over the last two seasons, plus an 18th-place finish at the 2004 World Championships in Oberhof, Germany, Clegg is positioned well going into Turin.
