Canadian couples in Turin
ERIC FRANCIS -- Calgary Sun

TURIN -- While Thomas Grandi and Sara Renner are the most visible of Olympic couples, a handful of other well-known Canadian athletes will attend the Games with their Olympic sweetheart in tow.

The rising number of Canadian Olympic couples this time is fitting given the Salt Lake Games were dominated by a pair -- figure skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier -- whose on-ice passion translated into a wedding last month in Banff:

* Defending gold medallist Beckie Scott is married to former U.S. Olympic skier Justin Wadsworth, who will be in Turin as a U.S. team techie.

* Milaine Theriault will make her third Olympic skiing appearance with partner Robin McKeever looking on. McKeever will stay in Turin for the Paralympic Games in which he'll race alongside brother Brian who dominates as the world's top blind cross-country skier.

* Speed skating medal favourite Jeremy Wotherspoon will have girlfriend Kim Weger by his side. She will also compete in the women's 500.

* Speed skaters Justin Warsylewicz and Brittany Schussler met in the same Olympic Oval where Catriona Le May Doan met Oval worker-husband Bart.

* Calgary bobsled sensation Helen Upperton found romance at Canada Olympic Park where she met and trained with Olympic bobsled boyfriend Serge Despres.

* Women's hockey team captain Cassie Campbell recently wed Hockey Canada v.p. of communications Brad Pascall, who will work closely with the men's and women's teams.

* Downhill skier Kelly VanderBeek will draw strength from boyfriend and four-time Olympic kayaker David Ford, who will leave his winter training sessions in Australia to join her in Turin.

"His experiences and his stories have helped me to prepare for the pressure and everything that goes in the Olympics," said the 22-year-old.
