Canucks make history, crash
By ERIC FRANCIS -- Calgary Sun

TURIN, Italy -- Calgary's Jeff Christie made Canadian history yesterday with an eighth-place finish in the Olympic luge competition.

Entering the final day ranked 14th, the 23-year-old Calgary resident had two solid runs to record Canada's best Olympic finish in the men's singles competition, beating the previous mark set by Kyle Connelly who finished 11th in Salt Lake City.

Olympic rookie Sam Edney, 21, also fared well moving up from 22nd to 13th yesterday, while fellow Calgarian Ian Cockerline had his first Olympic experience end in disappointing fashion by failing to finish his final run.

The 21-year-old Cockerline entered the final day in 13th spot before a mishap near the bottom of the course ended his day.

In two-man luge training yesterday, Calgary's Moffat brothers - Mike and Chris - finished seventh and ninth while the Grant Albrecht/Eric Pothier team was tenth and 11th.

Red Deer's Regan Lauscher, and Calgary's Alex Gough and Meaghan Simister will open Day 1 of the women's singles competition today, followed by the final runs tomorrow and the men's doubles Wednesday.
