CANADA VS. SWITZERLAND
- The skinny: Team Canada hasn't faced any difficult tests in its first two games, but now it'll have to turn it up a bit. The Swiss pulled off a huge upset by knocking off the Czechs 3-2 on Thursday. The Swiss, who received solid goaltending from the Colorado Avalanche's David Aebischer, frustrated the Czech stars by getting in their faces. Canada needs a victory to maintain confidence going into the bigger games of the tournament.
- Keys to game: Martin Gerber of the Carolina Hurricanes is expected to start in goal for the Swiss and will face a barrage of shots. There were no changes to the Canadian lines yesterday at practice.
- Injuries: None.
- TV: CBC, 9:30 a.m.
KEY GAMES:
FINLAND VS. CZECH REPUBLIC
- The injured Dominik Hasek and Patrik Elias are gone. Did the Czechs' gold-medal chances leave with them? The Czechs didn't look good in losing to Switzerland and their big stars have to perform better. Martin Rucinsky, Vaclav Prospal and Jaromir Jagr need to step up to save their shot at the title. A loss could be devastating because the Czechs face a tough road ahead. Finland might be missing players, too, but it is still a respectable opponent.
U.S VS. SLOVAKIA
- This has the potential to be a great one. The Americans are taking heat for drawing 3-3 with Latvia in their opener and then beating Kazakhstan by only 4-1. The Slovaks have lots of offensive firepower, including former Senator Marian Hossa, and if the U.S. can't keep up to them, it's going to present a huge problem. On paper, the Americans should win, but Slovakia will push them hard. This could be the game of the day.
