As of late Thursday afternoon the only sign that Tony Stewart was in the vicinity of Michigan International Speedway was a giant black, yellow and red 18-wheeler emblazoned with the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion’s name, those of his chief corporate sponsors — Bass Pro Shops and Mobil 1 — and the No. 14.

When that No. 14 Stewart Haas Racing Chevrolet is rolled off the hauler on Friday morning for practice for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400, it won’t be Stewart behind the wheel.

Stewart Haas Racing announced late Thursday afternoon that veteran Jeff Burton will fill in this weekend.

“Tony Stewart has decided not to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event this weekend at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn,” said a release from SHR communications boss Mike Arning. “This driver change pertains only to Michigan. Stewart’s plans for upcoming Sprint Cup races have yet to be determined.”
