Under a post card perfect back drop and in front of a near capacity crowd, A.J. Allmendinger won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International on Sunday in the No. 47 JTG-Daugherty Racing Chevrolet.

It was the first Cup victory for Allmendinger, whose last win in a top racing series was in 2006 at the Honda Indy Toronto.

It was a wicked bad crash involving Ryan Newman’s No. 41 Chevrolet and Michael McDowell’s No. 95 Ford, however, that was the thing that most will remember about this race.

The huge wreck was triggered when Newman lost control coming out of turn five on lap 56 sending him careening, first into the inside wall and then across the track right into the path of a charging McDowell sending his car into the air and into the outside guard railing.

Both cars were utterly destroyed yet both drivers miraculously walked away unscathed.
