James Hinchcliffe has two things on his mind this week — win one or both of the back-to-back Honda Indy Toronto Verizon IndyCar Series races, and extend his contract to drive the No. 27 Andretti Autosport Honda for next season.
The first one will surely be the most difficult.
Hinchcliffe said in a one-on-one interview on Wednesday that his contract is all but a done deal — just waiting for the team to exercise its option by Aug. 1.
“My thoughts on the whole contract situation are pretty simple, you know, that the team has been doing a great job,” the Oakville native said. “I think I have been driving better than I ever have in the past and the sponsor is happy so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t just continue with what we have been doing.”
What he would like to change are the circumstances that he has had to deal with in a series of misfortunes on the track in the first 12 races that have kept him out of the winner’s circle.
