The news that Michael Schumacher is out of a coma has rekindled hope that the seven-time Formula 1 world champion is on the road to recovery more than five months after suffering a near-fatal head injury while skiing in France during a Christmas vacation with his son last year.
A news release from Schumacher’s family and management team, however, does not say if the German auto-racing superstar is awake, only that he is no longer in a coma.
There is a difference.
Here is the statement released Monday:
“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble (hospital) to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.
“His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first-aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months."
