Memo to Verizon IndyCar Series bosses: Shortening the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Birmingham on Sunday because of a rain delay negates any kudos you may have earned by racing in the wet.

By my watch the race at Barber Motorsports Park had plenty of time to run its advertised full length, even with the two hour delay due to thunder and lightning at the track, 50 kms east of Birmingham.

If IndyCar wants to shed its image as a second tier outfit it can’t be dictated to by their television partners.

NBCSports would never think of ordering NASCAR to shorten a race when it goes stock car racing next season.

And imagine what would happen if it tried to pull that off with Bernie Ecclestone and Formula 1.
