TORONTO - It has been a while — actually more than five full Formula 1 seasons — since you could legitimately claim that Lewis Hamilton was a threat to win a second world championship.

Of course, if you read only the British racing press, Hamilton was in contention every year, but the truth is as bright and formidable is his talent, he more often than not shot himself in the foot on the track.

Hamilton’s record shows overwhelming wins too often followed by inglorious losses in his final three McLaren seasons and the same last year in his first campaign for Mercedes.

But this season Hamilton has served notice he is back on his 2007 world championship form and nowhere did it show more than this past Sunday at the Shanghai circuit where he won his third consecutive Grand Prix.

And he did with panache, something that had been missing over the past half decade.
