There was a time when Auto Club Speedway, then known as California Speedway, just inland from Los Angeles, was seen as the gateway to a new generation of NASCAR fans.

It was thought it would do for NASCAR what the Los Angles Kings with Wayne Gretzky would do for hockey in Southern California — take stock car racing out of its South East U.S. enclave and into mainstream American sports.

It didn’t matter that the NASCAR stars pretty much hated the single-file racing that the two-mile oval produced in its early years

As for hoping SoCal would embrace stock car racing, it didn’t happen, with the track eventually losing one of its two Sprint Cup races for lack of attendance.

Now, a reversal of sorts could be seen starting on Sunday at the Auto Club 400.
