Formula One legend Michael Schumacher hit his head on a rock after falling 10 metres down a mountain, investigators have revealed.
The 45-year-old German has been in a coma in a Grenoble hospital since December, following a skiing accident in the French Alps.
French investigators have now revealed Schumacher skied into a boulder partially hidden by snow and lost control. The impact tossed him down an off-piste slope and onto a rock, which caused his life-threatening injuries.
Investigators have ruled out any criminal wrongdoing at the ski resort.
"The investigation into the causes and consequences of the Dec. 29 skiing accident of Michael Schumacher ... has been closed on Feb. 12," Albertville prosecutor Patrick Quincy said in a statement.
