The news on Tuesday that Formula 1 driver Paul di Resta had signed a contract with Mercedes to return to sports car racing in the DTM series was disconcerting to say the least.

It did, however, speak volumes about the costs and politics of Formula 1 racing circa 2014.

For those who did not notice, di Resta was one of the more entertaining and talented drivers in the past two F1 seasons where he drove the heck out of a second-tier Force India race car.

The 27-year-old native of Uphall, Livingston, Scotland, and first cousin to three-time Indianapolis 500-winner Dario Franchitti, was clearly the best of the rest behind the Red Bull, Mercedes, Lotus Renault and McLaren teams.

What di Resta was missing was a big bankroll in his back pocket to pay off a team owner in order to stay on the F1 circuit.
