TORONTO - The most influential Canadian in all of NASCAR has never driven a single lap in a Sprint Cup race, a Nationwide Series race or a Camping World Truck Series race.

Gene Stefanyshyn, however, has the ear of the top brass in the world’s top stock car racing sanctioning body.

Stefanyshyn, a native of Oshawa with an undergraduate degree in engineering and a Masters degree in economics from the University of Western Ontario, was appointed NASCAR vice-president, innovation and racing development, R&D at the start of this season to perfect the Generation 6 car.

He came to NASCAR after a 30-year career with General Motors where he oversaw the development of the new generation of both the Chevrolet Corvette and the Chevrolet Camaro.

Stefanyshyn is held in such high regard that just last week he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Engineering Achievement Award from Kettering University for his contribution to the field of engineering.
