It wasn’t exactly a case of Rule Britannia on Saturday but it was close enough with native son Lewis Hamilton putting his Mercedes on the pole for Sunday’s Formula 1 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit.

I am certain Hamilton heaved a huge sigh of relief as he threw his Silver Arrow around the track at a pace that surprised even his fiercest rivals.

In a final lap in the third round of qualifying Hamilton’s time of one minute, 29.607 seconds was an astounding 0.4 seconds in front of his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who will start beside him on the front row on Sunday with a time of 1:30.059.

The slap down was a message to Rosberg that Hamilton came over to Mercedes this season to be nobody’s No. 2.

It was also a reminder to his career long rival Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull that Hamilton still has it in him to produce spectacular results.
