There are two things that most championship calibre athletes share — talent and confidence in equal parts.

Five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson has both in spades.

How else can you explain his reaction to learning that after winning at Pocono Raceway last weekend he was 51 points clear of second place Carl Edwards in the 2013 championship battle.

Johnson and the No. 48 team is confident they can maintain that bulge over the next 12 races before the start of he Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. He maintains the confidence even with the impending birth of his and wife Chandra’s second child around the time of the final regular-season race at Richmond and the chance he might even be able to take the race off.

How is that for confidence.

“I knew we stretched (the lead),” he said. “I didn’t know it would be that much, so that’s great.
