Since the Mercedes team returned to Formula 1 in 2010 — it had previously been an engine supplier — there has been question after question about the progress the squad had been making.
On Saturday at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, it looked like it finally had the answer in qualifying with an all-Mercedes front row for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.
Nico Rosberg lapped the 4.655-km course in one minute 20.718 seconds to claim pole position with teammate Lewis Hamilton second at 1:20.972.
It is the second consecutive pole for Rosberg, but the first 1-2 start for Mercedes.
Rosberg’s pole at Bahrain, however, was wasted when the team had tire issues during the race.
The young German said Saturday he hopes those problems have been solved.
“The team has been working really hard to be even better, understanding how to get the most out of these tires,” he said.
