Carl Edwards has reversal of fortune to win Subway Fresh Fit 500

There were times last weekend at Daytona International Speedway when Carl Edwards must have felt that the gods of racing were against him.

Five times Edwards crashed his No. 99 Ford.

He wrecked it in practice; he wrecked it in qualifying races; he wrecked it in the Sprint Unlimited.

It looked for certain that the horrible luck that plagued him all of the 2012 season was back with a vengeance as the 2013 season got under way.

All that changed in two laps on Sunday, however, as he took the checkered flag at Phoenix International Raceway to win the Subway Fresh Fit 500.

It was one week shy of the two-year anniversary of his last win — 2011 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway — 70 races ago.


For Edwards — who finished in a tie with Tony Stewart in the 2011 championship only to lose on number of wins — it was an eternity.

And he can thank, and did, his new-found friend Brad Keselowski for pushing him past Johnson on the final re-start.
