NASCAR Sprint Cup superstar Jimmie Johnson is nicknamed 'Five Time' for a reason and must be considered a favourite to win the Great American Race and Daytona. (Reuters)

1. JIMMIE JOHNSON

They call him “Five Time” for a reason. Johnson has five NASCAR Sprint Cup championships and a win in the 2006 Daytona 500.

There is general agreement that he and crew chief Chad Knaus are the best at adapting to a new car and that is what it will take to win on Sunday in the Generation 6 car.

The No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team is a well-oiled machine that is hungry to get back into victory lane and there is no bigger stage to do that than the Great American Race.

“There isn’t a single race larger than this one,” Johnson said. “The Daytona 500 is in the same sentence as the other major auto racing events around the world. When you think of Monaco, Le Mans, Daytona 500, Indy 500, those are the staples.”

2. TONY STEWART

The Daytona 500 is one of the few big NASCAR races that Stewart has not won and he is anxious to end that drought.
