So there was Roger Penske this past weekend accepting accolades and the hardware that comes with his
No. 2 Penske Racing Dodge team winning the biggest prize in all of NASCAR — the 2012 Sprint Cup championship.
Penske, who also happens to be a 15-time Indianapolis 500 winner in the IZOD IndyCar Series, used the NASCAR pulpit on this occasion to offer Tony Stewart a deal that would see the three-time Sprint Cup champion do the double next May — that is race in the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
Penske promised that he would supply Stewart with a car and a crew for Indianapolis and provide the logistics to get him from Indianapolis to Charlotte between the two events.
At first there was laughter from the audience at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, but soon it was apparent that Penske was serious.
And why not?
This is a team owner who has won just about everything there is to win in North American stock car and open-wheel racing
