EDMONTON - Ryan Hunter-Reay won the pole for Sunday's Edmonton Indy and the $10,000 cheque that goes with it. But if you're looking for him in the race, don't be looking on the front row.

That'll be Dario Franchitti and Ryan Briscoe up front.

Hunter-Reay will start 11th due to a 10 spot penalty on the grid for making an unapproved engine change coming out of the race in Toronto.

It was a wild and crazy qualifying session as the cars raced on a dry track for their first time out, experienced a cloud-burst while waiting to go out for the second session and had to deal with a wet track, but no rain for the Firestone Fast Six.

In the Fast Six, Hunter-Reay, who had previously won only one previous pole in the series and that one back in 2004 in Milwaukee, nailed his fast lap late to take the pole.

Franchitti finished second, Ryan Briscoe third, Takuma Sato fourth, Alex Tagliani fifth and Helio Castroneves sixth.

Power led Tagliani, Sato, Briscoe, Scott Dixon and Simon Pagenaud get through from Group A while Hunter-Reay led James Hinchcliffe, Franchitti, Castroneves, Graham Rahal and Rubens Barrichello through from Group B.

Few expected Power and Dixon not to advance to the Firestone Fast Six.

Power, the defending champion won the pole here in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Sato won it last year.

Andretti Autosport won all three poles on the day, the IndyCar, Indy Lights and Star Mazda support series.
