In Edwards' mind, feud still on

BRISTOL, Tenn. — There were more than a few tense moment in the final laps of Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Jeff Byrd 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway as rivals Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards came close to rubbing bumpers.

The two have a history that goes back several seasons, but more recently, just two races ago, at Phoenix when Edwards felt Busch wrecked him.

Edwards said after Sunday’s race that the thought of bumping Busch’s No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota did enter his mind as the race wound down and at one point did give Busch a slight nudge.

“I should’ve hit him harder,” Edwards said. “But I thought I could get him clean. I still owe him one from Phoenix. I won’t let that happen again.”

But he said that he was afraid he might wreck himself by taking Busch out at that point in the race.

“We were running so hard at that point in the run, I don’t know that you could really bump a guy and just move him,” Edwards said. “You might cause a big wreck, you might wreck yourself.”

Edwards said he hasn’t forgotten the Phoenix incident, but will bide his time to get even with Busch

“I figured we’d let it calm down and we’d just race,” he said. “It ended up the fastest car at the end won the race. Hindsight is 20/20, but that’s the way it panned out.”

As for Busch, he said he was baffled by all of Edwards talk of a feud and paybacks.

He said he thought what happened at Phoenix was now behind them and that he had no idea that Edwards still felt the pair had a running feud.

“I have no idea what I’m owed from,” Busch said. “I don’t remember what I did that made him mad. Apparently, he still thinks that.

“You’ll have to ask Edwards. Normally, when it’s against you, you’ll remember it forever.”

Edwards has been at the centre of more than one feud, most famously with Brad Keselowski last season when the two traded dangerous wrecks at Atlanta and Talladega.

He was put on a season-long probation for those altercations.

Busch said he isn’t going to lose sleep waiting to see how Edwards might retaliate.

“Carl says what Carl says,” he said. “I don’t know. Apparently I have one coming. When and where it comes I do not know.
