MILAN -- Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton knows how to be the fastest on the race track but in his private life he cools down with reggae music or hanging around in a jogging suit with his girlfriend.
“I am not a fashion icon, I just want to be myself,” the 25-year-old Briton, wearing a dark tailored suit with an unbuttoned white shirt, told Reuters at a cocktail party in the heart of Italy’s fashion capital.
Hamilton, who was invited to perform a DJ set at a fashion store ahead of Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix in Monza, said he was an amateur DJ in his teens, and still played guitar, but only in the comfort of his home.
“I didn’t have a DJ name, I just did it once, in a nightclub in London, many years ago. I was a DJ in my bedroom,” he said before joining the mixer, where he played tracks from Snoop Dogg to Alicia Keys.
“I love reggae, my family is from the Caribbean, so I’ve grown up with it, but I also like rap music and R&B,” he said.
Hamilton, who did not bring his pop star girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger along, said that unlike her he rarely had time for shopping, but when he entered a store, he snapped up all the tracksuits he could find.
“I don’t think I have a personal style. My girlfriend is very stylish, she really looks unbelievable, but me, I just try to keep up with her,” he said.
He said he imagined that life after racing might find him living as a family man.
The 2008 world champion, who is battling for the Formula One title after losing it to compatriot and McLaren teammate Jenson Button last year, said he may listen to music to relax in the off hours but did not need a tune to calm down before a race.
“I am always calm, so it’s not a problem,” he said.
