T.O. driver sets record
By DEAN McNULTY, QMI Agency

BOWMANVILLE — Sometimes no matter how bad things seem, it all works out in the end.

Such was the case on Saturday when Robert Sabato, of Toronto, driver of the No. 22 CGI DeAngelis Racing WR1000 in the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites championship, set a class qualifying record of one minute, 19.515 seconds at the Mosport Grand Prix.

Here is a Sabato’s own description of how his day went from bad, to worse to record-breaking lap:

“I went out on new tires and I thought I was flying, but my gauges weren’t working.

“So I came back in — because I had no radio — and they told me I was a second and a half behind the pole. So I went back out, tried to go really hard and I spun out — I came back in because I thought there was something wrong with the car.

“But they said no, ‘It’s you.’

“So I decided I was going to do three laps to try to go for (the pole).

“I did the first lap and got the tires hot and it was like the clouds parted; the track cleared and I pushed a little harder but I didn’t expect a track record.”

Do you think the officiating has been fair in the Kings-Sharks series?
  Yes
  No
No ... but the refs seem to be evening it out themselves
