TORONTO - A 10-6 regular season and first-round playoff exit was not enough for the Toronto Rock. As a result, the team fired head coach Troy Cordingley on Friday.

“Troy was an integral part of the success the Rock achieved over the last four seasons including a championship in 2011,” general manager Terry Sanderson said. “I felt the team needed new bench leadership to get the franchise back to another championship.”

Sanderson also announced he would step down from his assistant coach’s role. Another assistant coach, John Lovell was promoted to the head job.

To say the least, this is a stunning development. Cordingley was named the National Lacrosse League’s coach of the year and in addition to the 2011 title, the Rock made the 2010 championship game and the team finished first in the regular season the past two years.
